Baby Crib Safety - What You Should Know

Author: Kat Goodman

If you're a mom or dad, no doubt you'll do anything to protect your baby. One of the places your baby spends a lot of time is in her baby crib.

You may feel at ease that your little one is safe in her crib, but think again. There is some information you should know about baby crib safety to be sure your little one is safe.

Although customizing older cribs to today's crib safety standards is doable. A better choice would be to purchase a new one.

Having your baby use the same crib you used, or possible even your parents used is very sentimental. Family treasures are wonderful, however, not the best choice when it comes to baby crib safety. These older cribs might have dangers in them that have been corrected in the newer models.

For example, old wooden cribs could have been painted with lead based paint, could be splintering because of age, or could simply have the slat spaces too far apart so that your child can get her limbs stuck in between them. This is cause for alarm.

While shopping, weather it be a second hand store or a yard sale, you come across an adorable used crib. Just like a used car, have it checked out.

Be sure to find out what it is going to take to meet current crib safety standards. If this is not worth your time and effort, don't buy it. You will be better off with a new one.

Avoid plush, soft bedding.

When you put your little one down to sleep, place her on a firm mattress, in the crib, on her back. Be careful not to cover her with blankets or use pillows to cushion her. This potentially could cause suffocation. You do want the bedroom itself be kept warm enough so that blankets will not be required. Mobiles should be above your baby's head where they can't be reached. Using mobiles are great for learning, as long as your baby is not yet capable of sitting up, reaching, or grabbing.

When your child is able to do these things, make certain the mobile is out of reach so she doesn't grab it and yank it down on herself.

Doing so could mean your child risks choking on small parts or strangling on strings or cords. Once your child is active enough to be able to reach and "play with" the mobile, it should be removed.

Practicing these baby crib safety tips could save you from a useless and unnecessary trip to the emergency room.
