Part Time Nannies - What Makes Part Time Nannies Different from Babysitters?

Author: Sheila Huggins

The services of part time nannies are more suitable for those who need regular nannies only for a few hours during the day and on a permanent basis. The regularity of the job makes the nature of their hiring different from babysitters, since the latter are hired only on special events or occasions.

1. Number of Hours
The number of hours that part time nannies render is often flexible and will be worked around the need of the family. There are those who render one whole day within a week and only a few hours for the remaining days during the week. This may conform to the time when the children to be minded will come home from school, while their parents are still at work.

In some households, the mother may work only three times during the week, hence, the nanny will also be required to report for work only on the days that the mother is at work or may also be required to work for additional hours even when the mother is at home. In some cases, one of the parents works at home but needs somebody to look after the kids and do the house chores even for just a few hours.

On the average, a part time nanny works around 15 to 20 hours in a week. It is also important for both parents and nanny to agree on the working hours and the time schedules.

2. Average Pay Rate of Part Time Nannies
Most part time nannies often possess higher skill levels than the babysitters or regular nannies. They may also act as tutors or drive their own cars so they can run errands like picking up the kids from school or buying groceries. Most of those who qualify as nannies are college students. Hence, these are some of the factors considered when determining the part time nannies’ pay rates.

The part time nannies may live in with the family or may live out in college dorms, where their geographical locations entail additional costs just to provide their child care giving skills. As an overall consideration, the prevailing rate in the area will also be observed.

The average pay rates for part time nannies range from $15 to $18 per hour. The latest surveys disclosed that live-in part time child care providers in the US Pacific, region earn an average of $500 per week; while those who work as live-out part time nannies in the New England area comes in next at $475 per week. The lowest earners are those from the Mountain areas who work as part time child minders and live out; their pay rate averages at $375 per week.

Due to their high levels of qualifications, part time nannies are said to be hard to come by because some prefer to have full time work. To resolve this problem, families within a neighborhood or area share a single nanny who will observe time shifts between households, in order to render her nanny services.

The above factors are considered in understanding the underlying circumstances when hiring part time nannies.
